Paying with Afterpay

Split your membership into 4 interest-free payments

Overview

Some clubs offer Afterpay as a payment option for memberships. Afterpay lets you split your membership fee into 4 interest-free fortnightly payments. Your membership is activated immediately — you don’t need to wait until all payments are made.

How Afterpay works

Afterpay splits your membership payment into 4 equal fortnightly instalments with no interest.

Example: $200 membership

PaymentAmountWhen
1st instalment$50.00At checkout
2nd instalment$50.002 weeks later
3rd instalment$50.004 weeks later
4th instalment$50.006 weeks later

What you need

  • An Afterpay account (free to create at checkout if you don’t have one)
  • A valid debit or credit card linked to your Afterpay account
  • To be 18 years or older

Approval

Afterpay assesses each purchase individually. Being approved for one purchase does not guarantee approval for another. Factors include your Afterpay payment history and the purchase amount.

If Afterpay declines your application, you can still pay for your membership by card at checkout. Afterpay does not disclose specific reasons for a decline.

Managing your payments

Through the Afterpay app you can:

  • View your upcoming payment schedule
  • Make early payments at any time with no penalty
  • Reschedule an upcoming payment date (limits apply)
  • Set up payment reminders

Late payments

If you miss a scheduled payment:

  • A $10 late fee is charged immediately
  • If still unpaid after 7 days, an additional $7 late fee applies
  • Late fees are capped at 25% of the order value (e.g., maximum $50 on a $200 membership)
  • Your Afterpay account is frozen until the overdue payment is made
  • No interest is ever charged

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, contact Afterpay’s hardship team before your payment is due. They can arrange payment pauses or adjusted schedules.

Important

  • Missing Afterpay payments does not affect your club membership — your membership was activated at the time of purchase and the club has already been paid
  • However, missed payments will affect your Afterpay account standing and your ability to use Afterpay in the future
  • Under Australian regulations effective June 2025, BNPL providers including Afterpay must conduct affordability assessments and comply with responsible lending obligations

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to have an Afterpay account already? No. You can create an Afterpay account during checkout. You will need a valid debit or credit card and to be 18 years or older.

Q: Is there interest on Afterpay payments? No. Afterpay never charges interest. You pay the membership price split into 4 equal instalments with nothing extra added.

Q: What if I can’t afford an upcoming payment? Contact Afterpay through their app before the payment is due. You can reschedule the payment date or contact their hardship team to discuss options. Acting early avoids late fees.

Q: Will using Afterpay affect my credit score? Afterpay does not currently perform a hard credit check for standard Pay in 4 purchases. However, under new Australian regulations effective June 2025, BNPL providers must conduct affordability assessments. This may include soft credit checks that do not affect your score.

Q: Can I pay off my membership early? Yes. You can make early payments at any time through the Afterpay app with no penalty or fees.

Q: What if Afterpay declines me? You can still pay for your membership by card at checkout. Afterpay assesses each purchase individually and does not disclose reasons for a decline. Common reasons include being new to Afterpay, having overdue payments on another Afterpay order, or the purchase exceeding your current spending limit.

Q: If I miss an Afterpay payment, does it cancel my club membership? No. Your membership is fully paid from the club’s perspective — they received the full amount when you checked out. Missing an Afterpay payment is between you and Afterpay. However, you will incur late fees from Afterpay.

Q: Can I get a refund on a membership paid via Afterpay? Refunds are subject to the club’s refund and cancellation policy. If the club approves a refund, it is processed through Afterpay and your remaining instalments are adjusted or amounts already paid are returned to your card.

Q: Is my payment information safe? Yes. Afterpay and Square are both PCI-DSS compliant payment platforms. Your card details are not stored by the club — they are securely managed by Afterpay.
